Frederic Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist born near Warsaw, Poland in 1810. He died at the age of 39 in Paris, France, in 1849. As a child prodigy, he gained entry into a group of wealthy, aristocratic families and became a well-known performer.

Prelude in E Minor is part of a group of Chopin preludes that he published in 1839. It stands alone as a gem in piano repertoire and is played by the young and old alike.

With a haunting melody that includes descending notes, Prelude in E Minor is one of the most iconic of all time. Expressive and moving, Chopin actually requested that it be played at his funeral.

I chose to perform this piece during the month of Elul in which we are preparing our hearts for the Jewish High Holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. During this time, Jews stand before G-d to recount and repent for their sins from the past year. It's a time when we put our trust in divine grace and forgiveness. It's also a time of reconnecting with our brothers and sisters here on Earth.

For me, music is a form of meditation and a great expression of emotions. During this time of Elul, I am especially moved by Chopin's deep and soulful works.

May this piece move your heart toward heaven, as it has mine. L'Shana Tova (For a Good Year)
